busy busy

Last week the Doha Tribeca Film Festival was here so I saw a grand total of seven films in four days! On opening night, they screened Amelia, the new movie by Mira Nair about Amelia Earhart—it was ok, not my favorite (loved Monsoon Wedding and Mississippi Masala) but the outdoor theater at the Museum of Islamic Art was worth it, and there were fireworks! I saw one of the films that won the audience choice award: Team Qatar, a documentary about five high school students from Qatar who participated in Qatar’s first appearance at the World Schools Debating Championships last year in DC. It was very feel-good, following the students from training to the competition. One of my students was in the film, she was great. She got to meet Robert DeNiro when they accepted their award—I was uber jealous :). In other exciting news, we went to the Sony Ericsson Championships and saw Venus and Serena play each other, Serena won. The game was pretty exciting—my first professional tennis match. We’re going to a soccer game too next week, between Brazil and England. Who knew Doha was such a hoppin’ place for sporting events?
