tasty buds
This semester, I want to try some new (hopefully delicious) places to eat in Doha. Noreen and I also have a plan to cook more often. Thus far, we’ve been to a new Indian place close to school, aptly called Tasty Buds and a Chinese restaurant called Ruby Wu’s. We’ll definitely be returning to Tasty since it’s as cheap as school cafeteria lunch (11 riyal) and the Chicken Kadai is yum. Ruby was a little pricey for our TA budgets, but I thought my fish in black bean sauce was pretty good. There seem to be no really good Chinese restaurants in Doha, hmm maybe it’s because there also aren’t that many Chinese people, but I will continue searching.
On the cooking front, I’ve claimed the sous chef status whereby I chop and monitor, but really don’t contribute creatively to the meal :). Thinking back, I think the only things I’ve made myself are my favorite tomato egg, a random red curry that’s half Indian half Thai, pasta of course, and oven fries. In our group cooking adventures, we’ve made kumpirs, basically baked potato that you can top with loads of veggies, sour cream, etc. We’ve also made Indian food (thanks to Noreen and her mom), yum. I think I’ll try really hard to remember how to make some of the Indian dishes—you never know when it will come in handy! Chicken pot pie, eggplant parm, stir fry have all been delicious, but really the crown jewel of our group cooking was Thanksgiving in Doha. It was pot luck style, but all the traditional Tgiving dishes were there—and homemade too!
